The 800 books collected by Baron Ferdinand de Rotshschild in the late 19th century, beautifully bound, many with a royal provenance, hold a mirror to 17th and 18th-century life: fashion and fiction, art and architecture, cookery and court life, war and peace and the revolution of 1789 which ended an era.
Curator Kristina Petri and Assistant Curator Helena Pickup will explore the riches of this outstanding collection - manuscripts, gilded and mosaic bindings, ephemera and the Cabinet du Roi engravings which captured the palaces and festivals of Louis XIV for posterity - as well as setting it in the context of 19th-century collecting.
