During 2011, 49 pairs of birds representing 36 species were set up prior to the breeding season. 29 of those pairs, from 25 species, reared a total of 82 chicks. We also saw much greater success with the breeding of endangered species last year. 33 of the chicks reared are threatened with extinction in the wild, the majority of those individuals being listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN red list.
Two species of particular importance were bred. The first parent reared Black & White Laughingthrushes (Garrulax bicolor) in the UK were produced at as well as the first Spectacled Laughingthrush (Rhinocichla mitrata) bred in the UK.
